Controlling Your Blood Pressure
Controlling Your Blood Pressure
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke. According to the CDC, nearly half of U.S. adults have high blood pressure, yet many are unaware they have it because it often has no symptoms. Over time, uncontrolled blood pressure can damage arteries, strain the heart, and harm organs such as the kidneys and brain. The good news is that high blood pressure can often be managed—or even prevented—through healthy lifestyle choices and, when needed, medication.
Lifestyle changes are a powerful way to lower and control blood pressure. Eating a balanced diet low in sodium and rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; staying physically active; maintaining a healthy weight; managing stress; and limiting alcohol all contribute to healthier numbers. Quitting smoking and getting adequate sleep can also help protect your heart and blood vessels. Even small improvements in daily habits can make a meaningful difference.
